On the Pilgrim's Road from Rieti to Assisi

There is a landscape in the heart of Italy, the Rieti Valley, that is so quiet you can almost hear the footsteps of history. They call it the Holy Valley for a reason. It was here, among the stone villages and rustling olive groves, that Saint Francis of Assisi found his deepest connection to the world.

This is where our journey begins.

A pilgrimage is not a vacation. It is a walk into presence. It is the simple rhythm of your own two feet on the earth, the taste of local bread and wine, the shared silence with fellow walkers, and the space to let your own thoughts unfold. The path from Rieti to Assisi is a special one, steeped in the story of a man who loved the land and its creatures.

We will trace his path, not as tourists, but as pilgrims. We’ll visit the sanctuaries he built, see the manger scene he created in Greccio, and walk the forested slopes of Monte Subasio. With every step, we move not just across the hills of Umbria, but closer to the heart of a story that has shaped centuries.

Your host, Mark Goodman, will be there to unfold these stories, to guide the way, but the pilgrimage itself is yours. It is the journey inward that matters most.

The road is waiting.

(We walk from April 25 to May 5, 2026. You can find the full itinerary and details here: Rieti to Assisi Group Trek
